Frequently Asked Questions

Why?

Beautiful expressions of mathematics stimulate the aesthetic centers of the brain in the same way as beautiful artwork or music. By combining mathematics, art, and the human form, Naked Geometry seeks to simultaneously appeal to the reader's mind, body, and spirit. Besides, what could be better than thinking about math while looking at naked people?

How did you make these pictures?

These have all been computer generated using Poser, Bryce, Photoshop, POV-Ray, AppleWorks, and others. With most of the images, each figure had to be individually positioned in space with each joint bent, twisted, and rotated correctly, sometimes down to the individual finger joints. Each picture required working knowledge of anatomy, geometric relationships, transformations, and a wide range of mathematical tools.

How did you think of this?  How long did this take?

It started in 2002 with an idea to create polyhedra from people, first from clay and wire models and soon after to digital art. The first image was so compelling, I had to keep making them. Some of the images took hundreds of versions and weeks or even months of work to get just right, but I was hooked. Five years later, I had enough images to create a book.

Can I see more?

This site, including the video, contain only a small fraction of images in the Naked Geometry book – there's a lot more to be seen and learned!  Visit the store to find out more.

How can I help?

Of course you should also buy the book and visit our support page.

What now?

The Naked Geometry Project continues! New material, new media, and an exciting extension of this work are being developed right now. Be sure to watch for our newsletter (coming soon!) to keep up-to-date on upcoming releases, performances, and parties. Read up on progress on the Naked Geometry blog.
