Naked
Geometry Blog
2008 June: 2nd Edition
The new edition is now available with
lots of new pictures and rerenders of some old ones. Publishing has
moved to Amazon.com's publishing company, and the book is available
through their website. Naked Geometry has received an enthusiastic
welcome in Norway and has now been translated into Norwegian. We are
awaiting the proof from the publisher.

2007 September: Human Geometry preview
The Bridges conference was very successful. Work has begun on another human math-art project, Human Geometry, the release date to be announced. Preview some of the work at www.humangeometry.com. The Naked Geometry book first edition will only be available for a short time as I'll be moving overseas for a year.
2007 July 21: Naked Geometry goes to Spain
Naked Geometry goes to San Sebastian, Spain, for the Bridges Exhibit of Mathematical Art. Two pieces, Family Tree and Human Polyhedra, will be exhibited this week in this international art gallery.
2007 July 20: Naked Geometry and Reality
What does Naked Geometry have to do with reality? I'm not sure, but two
sites, Reality Carnival and Reality Sandwich, have shown interest. A
shout-out to Clifford Pickover for both his friendly encouragement, and also for his dazzling Reality Carnival site. Cliff is a great author and fascinating character.
Also on the "reality" scene: a shout-out to Reality Sandwich for this write up: http://www.realitysandwich.com/node/357

It's been a busy month – The Human Geometry Project has
just launched with the release of images from the upcoming Human
Geometry Book. In this work, the figures are clothed. This
is being created at the suggestions of teachers who would like to use
the material with their students, but cannot show them artwork
containing nudity. Though I was reluctant to jeopardize the
classical beauty of the artwork, I have found intriguing ways to
incorporate colorful clothing into the works in a way which adds to the
visual appeal and also to the clarity of the mathematical ideas.
Check it out and see!

There's been a lot of visitors this past week
– more in the last 3 days than in first 3 months! Thank you for
telling your friends, it's been very exciting around Naked Geometry
headquarters this week. Landmarks: 20,000 page views on this
site, and the video posted on You-Tube has topped 1000 views.
T-shirts and mugs are online! The store is now updated with a variety
of clothing options and designs, as well as bags, posters, and prints.
Only 1 in 35 visitors discovers the hidden animation on one of these pages (not a video, but an animated image).

Naked Geometry goes to Bridges! Two images have been chosen to be
shown at the Bridges Mathematical Art conference this summer in San
Sebastian, Spain. In preparation, I've rerendered one of the
fractal images to a resolution of over 35 Megapixels... the render had
to be done in four parts and generated so much heat that it disabled
part of my keyboard for two days. The final version is worth it
-- 11 iterations are visible, making the smallest elements 1/2048 the
height of the largest element. The printed versions will be
matted and framed.
Most of the images in the book are about 1.5 Megapixels, I've begun
reworking some of the images at 6 Megapixels to make them suitable for
posters. The mathematics that goes into creating the figures is
fun and addictive and something that I'm steadily getting better at
doing, and in the last few months I've been using a new multi-processor
Mac which has dropped the render times from hours to minutes.
Still, initial renders often take a dozen or more tries, and then
the post render work can take several hours over a few days.

Thank you to those
buying books! We're getting hits from all over the world –got a
visit from Hammerfest, Norway, the furthestmost
northern city in the world (city = inhabitation of greater than
6000
people). We've added Israel, Argentina, Poland, Russian, Bosnia,
Kenya, Columbia, Finland, Singapore, India, Chile, Taiwan, Denmark,
Kampong Potong (had to look that one up), and Portugal. The first
overseas order is being sent to New Caledonia. (I had to look
that one up, too.)
One reader of the book comments: "I
started going through the book with every intention of ogling, and find
myself studying the concepts, completely forgetting the forms were made
of naked people. How cool."
And a mother writes: "I'm getting one for my son. This will make him like geometry!"

28:
Lots of hits from Japan in the past few days. A big THANK YOU to
the online Mathematics Museum in Japan
(http://mathmuse.sci.ibaraki.ac.jp) for linking this site. We've
also picked
up Germany, Romania, and India. Send me an email!
Just registered an ISBN
number and the gears are turning to get the book listed on Amazon and
Barnes and Noble.
24: Turkey, South Africa, and China. The
site has been up for one week and we've hit six of the seven
continents. Now if I could only figure out how to get a hit from
Antarctica, we'd be truly global.
22: A shout out to Honolulu, Manitoba, and Aukland NZ! Also
our first visitors from France and Italy. Hardcover books have
arrived at last from the printer and Wow! They look great!
19: Visits from West Bromwich, England (home of the Baggies), Bogota
Columbia, and Glasgow Scotland. No ratings yet on the YouTube posting of the video.
Here's a direct link to the video on You Tube, why not post some comments?
18:
The hits are slowly rolling in. Some of them are
from
people I know. Some I know are friends of people I've asked to spread
the word. Also got some hits from Ireland, Norway, Australia,
and
Kuwait.
Comments
are overwhelmingly positive, and even the people I expected to not like
this art have surprised me with their enthusiasm and energy. It seems
like most people "get it." Thank you, friends!
17: I've told a few friends and family about the site and it will
be fun to see how NG spreads. The video is uploaded
now, it's a very refreshing way to look at math. I may make a
subtitled version as well.
The music in the video is based on a fractal
pattern. You
can build the pattern as such: a, aBa, abaCaba, abacabaDabacaba, etc.
You can download the music and other interesting things here.
16: Naked Geometry is online! Thanks for visiting
and for
being a part of the launch of the Naked Geometry project. The project
is expected to grow in many directions, stop by here to follow the
progress.
